Hai ALL ,hey !

Oh yes, Lady Gaga has a new video and this is yet another one of those posts where a random person foolishly allowed on the internet ,with no expertise , reviews the shiny new thing.

Let’s get down to business then ! I’m not one of those diehard Lady Gaga fans, I don’t like all her songs or even know all her songs, I haven’t listened to a full record or anything like that but I must say I do like her . I also must say I like her videos in general , there’s something fresh about them and there’s this feeling that she doesn’t care what people will say about it, she is a nonconformist ,she has a weird, eclectic style ,she’s all over the place sometimes, she exaggerates but she does it in a charismatic, artistically pleasing , smart kind of way and I like that, I find it appealing and fascinating. Of course, it helps that I don’t have inhibitions and preconceived notion, I’m very open minded and it takes a whole lot for me to get offended or disturbed by something ,especially when we’re talking about art, movies, music. So, instead of being offended by ,say , Alejandro or Telephone, I was able to have fun and enjoy it for its artistic value, they were beautifully made videos, nicely filmed, great choreography, humor and a good message for those who managed to get past the shock factor.

Born This Way is not her best video in my opinion , I think Alejandro and Bad Romance were the best, I loved Alejandro to bits and Bad Romance is her best song but Born This Way isn’t bad either.

Yesterday evening I was all “ooooh, Lady Gaga’s video premiered” so I checked to see if the YouTube video is working and it was and I made myself comfortable in a  “Gurl, tis gonna’ be guuuuud” type of way then pressed play. I liked the theme, the general idea of birth and a new race and all the metaphors , I liked the costumes and the make up and the dancing and I grew fonder of the song as well. My problem with it is that I feel it was incomplete somehow , like it missed something . It also seemed all over the place ,like it didn’t really make sense, not the message cause that made sense and I got it but the various visual scenarios , it looked rather simple ,more mellow rather than explosive. I did enjoy it, I had a good laugh and the song is catchy but it just didn’t deliver the punch I always expect from Lady Gaga’s videos.

I must say , I had a problem with the song because, while catchy , it is really in rip-off territory ,it’s so similar to not one but a bunch of songs so I was a little disappointed by the lack of originality but I don’t think that this is done on purpose not out of laziness or lack of creativity , I like to think she does it precisely because she has a love for this style and Madonna’s music and she wants to use those influences without fear of being called a fraud or unoriginal because she does bring original tones to it, she adds a personal touch and all that.

One thing I really love about Born This Way are the lyrics. Seriously, I love the lyrics and I like the connection she has with her fans and how she at least seems to truly want to be a voice for people society tends to lock down upon or deem as weird, wrong, worthless for things that really don’t matter ,superficial stereotypes. I also like that ,as opposed to other celebrities who sing and praise “weird” people, outcasts, equality ,depth over superficiality but they themselves are happily included in the beautiful, perfect ,rich , “normal” category , Lady Gaga embraces this image of the weird ,eccentric ,outcast type and for all the glamor and the money she is exactly that only powerful and rich.I don’t know if it is 100% marketing strategy or it’s something that Lady Gaga honestly believes in just like I don’t know if her affection for and connection with her “little monsters” is genuine or not but it at least seems more genuine than the ones exhibited by other music stars/celebrities so props for that.

To summarize it all for the tl;dr crowd , Born This Way is no Bad Romance or Alejandro in my view but it’s an interesting video and certainly different and fresh compared to everything in the industry right now and the lyrics of the song are great, the tune is catchy and fun ,definitely enjoyable if you have an open mind.
